The second volume of the 'hang all dj's' series is more of a well chosen mixed compilation than a collection of bootlegs/mashups. Soulwax have chosen very few tracks from curent artists (Dexter, Kiki, Spiller, Agent Sumo, Copyright, Standards, Angie Martinez.), and instead pulled some choice tracks from the disco era, plus the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

Their craft is in the weave that they use to pull it all together. The attention to detail and the odd items used in transitions are what make Soulwax unique among artists putting together left-field compilations. Stuff is not added just for the sake of it. Every element seems to have its place in the finished product, and the feel is never cluttered.

Hang All Dj's Pt.1

Stephen and David, the 2 guys who as Soulwax produce a radio show which spawned five volumes of 2 many dj's compilations, have begun a new series called 'hang all dj's.'

Before you read any further, I am telling you that this is fantastic. While some folks have recently started jibing the 2 many dj's series as having too much music of the moment, 'hang all dj's' is filled with classic rock and hiphop gathered and used in very clever and respectful ways. It is not an electroclash album.

The songs used in this sixty three minute compilation spanning 42 songs make full appearances - they are not just tasted upon in a Stars On 45 way, as Trevor Jackson did in his (excellent) Playgroup Party Mix CD. The songs on 'hang all dj's' sound as if they are in their original form - until you look deeper and realize that they have been completely reinvented as new tracks.

Dj Mozart @ Tana club (Italy)1978 and Amnesia (Terni)1985

DJ Mozart (aka Claudio Rispoli) was a contemporary and friend of Daniele Baldelli in Italy. At Baia Degli Angeli he and Baldelli would make famous the music that would fall under the description of "cosmic".

After the original Baia was closed by the police (drugs, of course....) Baldelli moved to the new Cosmic club, while Rispoli worked at a club called Tana....

Two mixes from the Rimini, Afro-Cosmic Dj...

First is a beautiful full-on disco mix of DJ Mozart at the Tana Club circa 1978. There's no tracklist, sorry, but you definitely get the vibe of what it was like to swing in Italy during the late '70's...

The guys over at Go Bang Brighton are running a month long festival from the 2-31 of may 2009

the guys say....

"The idea is fairly simple, we pick some nice venues for a month and fill them with music and people. Musically all bases are covered, disco, funk, real house music, acid house classics, cosmic, nu jazz, soul and boogie, the emphasis being on quality groove based sounds for the whole month."

"The scene for this kind of music has been gradually building over the last 12 months since Go Bang Brighton 2008, all being well 2009 will once again bring more good times and great music to our seaside resort."

Alien Project vs Raja ram-Live @ Sundance Festival (Eila) 2003

Raja Ram (born Ronald Rothfield, in 1941 in Melbourne, Australia) is a musician and the owner of the UK record label TIP World. Raja Ram left Australia in the 1950s to begin the hippie trail. He returned to Australia later and studied flute at the Melbourne Conservatory. Raja Ram also went to New York in 1965 to study jazz. He was a member of the band Quintessence in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Shortly after, Raja Ram was forced to retire for personal reasons and became an envelope salesman. In the 1980s, he decided to return to the music scene as he now became interested in the emerging genre of electronic music. He was one of the first people to make what is today considered psychedelic trance.
Raja Ram formed TIP Records in 1994 with Graham Wood and Ian St. Paul. It soon became one of the most well-known Goa Trance labels. After the label folded in 1998, Raja Ram then founded TIP World in 1999.
He collaborated with Simon Posford on the Shpongle and The Mystery of the Yeti projects and is a founder of 1200 Micrograms.

Wood Allen..."Airport 89"
'Airport 89' was produced by Wood Allen, which was in fact just another alias for the highly productive and prolific Davoli, Limoni and Simplici... better known as Black Box, Starlight, The Mixmaster, Groove Groove Melody etc.etc.!
The synth riff was one of the most instantly recognisable of the late eighties(Taken from the Rah Bands "Electric Fling"), and coupled with the clever and highly effective aeroplane bassline, hence the 'Airport', the single enjoyed phenonemal success on the better dancefloors around Europe.

The Rah Band..."Electric Fling"...
This fictitious studio group was masterminded by Richard A. Hewson (b. 17 November 1943, Stockton-on-Tees, Teeside, England). In the late 60s arranger, conductor and multi-instrumentalist Hewson worked with James Taylor and Herbie Hancock and arranged hits such as the Beatles "The Long And Winding Road' and Mary Hopkins" "Those Were The Days". His fame as an arranger spread and in the next decade he worked with artists including Supertramp, Diana Ross, Carly Simon, Art Garfunkel, Leo Sayer, Al Stewart, Chris DeBurgh, Fleetwood Mac and Chris Rea. In 1976 he decided to produce, write and play on his own records under the name RAH Band. In 1977 the instrumental "The Crunch" on Good Earth climbed into the UK Top 10. Three years later "Falcon" hit the Top 40 and started a long string of dance hits for the band. In 1985 "Clouds Across The Moon', with vocals by his wife Liz, gave him a second Top 10 single. Over the years the band have chalked up seven UK hits and have had records on a myriad of labels including DJM, KR, TMT, Sound, RCA, Supreme and Creole. Hewson, who in the 80s worked with Toyah and Five Star and produced big hits for Cliff Richard and Shakin" Stevens, now concentrates on writing and producing music for UK television shows and advertisements.

Grace Jones Compass Point Sessions...My Favorites...

Grace Jones recorded three albums with Sly & Robbie in the legendary Compass Point Studios, Bahamas during the period of 1980-1982; Warm Leatherette, Nightclubbing and Living My Life. Private Life: The Compass Point Sessions contains long and extended version of her hits, although the CD booklet claims that these haven't been issued before, most of them have in fact appeared on numerous CD re-issues around the world. Other tracks were remixed or re-edited by the PolyGram/Universal engineers in 1998 for this particular compilation - this instead of using the many existing long or extended versions by original producers Chris Blackwell and Alex Sadkin that were mixed and released on vinyl in 1980-1982. The track "Living My Life" appears as an edited remix by Paul "Groucho" Smykle - dating from 1986, which the liner notes fail to mention. Another anomaly on The Compass Point Sessions is that it concludes with "Slave To The Rhythm", a track which was recorded in 1985, in London and with British producer Trevor Horn. Also the mix used, here renamed "Hot Blooded Version", is again an alternate 1998 re-mix/re-edit of the original 12" version entitled "Blooded."

The World of Arthur Russell

The denizen of a strange netherworld when an experimental composer and at other times - LOOSE JOINTS, DINOSAUR L, LOLA...- the host of NY's freakiest nights, Arthur Russell was one of the pivotal figure and most impressive talent of NYC's downtown scene.

Born in Iowa, Russell sudied cello and music before moving to San Fransisco in the early seventies where he reportedly worked in conjunction with JOHN CAGE and ALLEN GINSBERG while studying Indian music at the Ali Akbar Khan School. Accordingly those two conections are traceable in works such as WORLD OF ECHO or TOWER OF MEANING that have both a distinctive experimental taint and a taste for the infinite.

After moving to New York in the late seventies, Russell became acquainted with music greats such as DAVID BYRNE, RHYS CHATHAM or JON GIBSON and this lead to the release in 1984 of INSTRUMENTALS a collection of tracks performed between 1975 and 1979.
However, despite his classical music pedigree, Russell first made a mark on the audience when taking part to the underground disco scene under a variety of monikers such as LOOSE JOINTS, LOLA or DINOSAUR L. Though his first disco release is reported to be KISS ME AGAIN on SIRE, it is really Loose Joints' Is it all over my Face? that put him under the limelight blessed as it was on its remix edition by two faultless LARRY LEVAN remixes.

Another stunning disco classic and one with an extremely leftfield production is DINOSAUR L's Go Bang, a track engraved into downtown's pantheon along with LIQUID LIQUID's Cavern. The FRAN?OIS K engineered track was actually released on Russell's own SLEEPING BAG imprint. Co-founded with Wiliam Socology, it was inauguated with the release of the 24-24 Music Ep. Though he remained a producer of leftfield disco throughout the eighties, Russell also focused on his more experimental works releasing WORLD OF ECHO and illustrating the works of Choregraphers. This was ended prematurely when in 1992, Russell died of AIDS.

Cymande vs James Mason Pt.2

Jazz-funk fans, believe the hype:

James Mason's Rhythm of Life is every bit the overlooked classic its small but fanatical cult following has built it up to be. Smoothly soulful (but not slick) and spiritually uplifting throughout, the album's blend of funky fusion and progressive R&B is hardly the stuff purist dreams are made of, but anyone who loves the deep grooves of Donald Byrd or Mason's former employer, Roy Ayers, will immediately understand why this is considered a masterpiece in acid jazz circles. Breezy ballads and ferocious up-tempo groovers alike benefit from Mason's sure sense of songcraft and his knack for full-bodied arrangements. Mason plays all the guitars and loads of vintage synths (two different ARPs and Fender Rhodes electric piano among them), so he's largely responsible for the instrumental meat of every track. And though he's a strong soloist when he chooses, his focus is more on creating luxurious textures and working the grooves. And work them he does -- the faster tracks are amazingly driving for the jazz-funk genre, taken at tempos that would be fast even for R&B or rock, with lots of frantically slapped bass from Gene Torres. Clarice Taylor's vocals are far more soulful than the charmingly amateurish jazz-funk norm; what's more, the songs -- all but one co-written by Ninoska Escobar -- aren't just perfunctory groove vehicles, but feel more substantially structured than is typical for the genre. At least four -- "Sweet Power Your Embrace," "Free," "Funny Girl," and "Slick City" -- have become rare-groove club standards, and the title cut is an absolute monster. Records like Rhythm of Life -- catchy, funky, richly textured, and utterly joyous -- are a huge reason the acid jazz movement came into being; since their virtues aren't as prized by hardcore jazzers, they might otherwise be consigned to oblivion. Thankfully, this one was rescued.

Cymande vs James Mason Pt.1

First is Cymande's "The Message"

Cymande (Sah-mahn-day) were an eclectic band who released several albums throughout the early 1970s. The group was formed in 1971 in London, England by musicians from Guyana and Jamaica. The name Cymande is derived from a Calypso word for Dove, which symbolizes peace and love.
The group developed a subtle and complex, deep funk style influenced by calypso rhythms, jazz, African music, American soul and UK rock of the time. Cymande can now be seen as one of the most sophisticated of the funk acts that evolved in the early 1970s. By the mid-70s the band members were going their separate ways and the group was disbanded in 1974. It wasn't until 20 years later that they reaped any financial rewards, as their music became a popular source for samplers. Cymande's original albums are still widely sought-after by DJ's and funk aficionados. Perhaps the band's best known recording is the soulful dancefloor filler called "Bra", which was later sampled by the American hip-hop group De La Soul and used as a breakbeat record by the godfathers of hip-hop Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash.
Cymande was accidentally discovered by English producer John Schroeder in a Soho, London club where they were rehearsing. He was there to see a rock band but the gig had been cancelled, and he stumbled upon this unique collection of West Indian musicians. He soon signed the band and recorded their initial single "The Message." The single was released by Janus Records, a division of Chess Records. The track reached number 20 on the US R&B and Pop charts. This set the stage for Cymande's self titled release in 1972.

A truly phenomenal performance. This was ripped from a bootleg 12".

Whilst working with UK guitarist John McLaughlin in 1969, Larry Young met Jimi Hendrix with whom he played organ on a few sessions.

He also played with John Coltrane (although these sessions were never recorded).

Larry was one of the great innovators of the mid to late '60's.

After playing with various R & B bands in the 1950's, and being featured as a sideman with tenor saxman Jimmy Forrest in 1960, Young debuted as a leader that year with 'Testifying', which, like his subsequent soul-jazz efforts for Prestige, 'Young Blues' (1960), and 'Groove Street', (1962), left no doubt that Smith was his primary inspiration.

But when Young went to Blue Note in 1964, he was well on his way to becoming a major innovator.

John Coltrane's post-bop influence asserted itself more and more in Young's playing and composing, and his work grew much more cerebral and exploratory.

'Unity', recorded in 1965, remains his best-known album.

Quick to embrace fusion, Young played with Miles Davis in 1969, John McLaughlin in 1970, and Tony Williams' groundbreaking 'Lifetime' in the early '70's.

From here he recorded two solo albums for Arista, 'Larry Young's Fuel' (1975), including 'Turn Off The Lights', and 'Spaceball' (1976), both highly collectable 'rare grooves' among UK funk, soul and jazz fans.

Young was only 38 when, in 1978, he checked into hospital suffering from stomach pains, and died from untreated pneumonia.

South African singing legend Miriam Makeba dies at 76

Miriam Makeba, the singer who became the musical symbol of the black struggle against apartheid, has died after collapsing at a concert in Italy. She was 76.
Makeba, nicknamed "Mama Africa" by a worldwide legion of fans and famed for hits such as "Pata Pata", "The Click Song", died of a heart attack in a Naples hospital after she collapsed as she left the stage at a benefit concert in Castel Volturno on Sunday.
"One of the greatest songstresses of our time Miriam Makeba has ceased to sing," said South African Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma in a statement.
The singer "died performing what she did best -- an ability to, communicate a positive message through the art of singing".
Born in Johannesburg on March 4, 1932, Makeba became one of Africa's best known singers and while Nelson Mandela was in prison took up the battle against apartheid through her music.
South Africa revoked her citizenship in 1960 and even refused to let her return for her mother's funeral. Makeba spent more than three decades in exile, living in the United States, Guinea and Europe.
She saw her music outlawed in her homeland after she appeared in an anti-apartheid film. But she was an international success, winning a Grammy award for Best Folk Recording with US singer Harry Belafonte in 1965 for the album "An Evening With Belafonte/Makeba".
"I kept my culture. I kept the music of my roots," she said in her biography. "Through my music I became this voice and image of Africa, and the people, without even realising."
But she also met controversy abroad. Her marriage to civil rights activist and Black Panthers leader Stokely Carmichael in 1968 caused controversy in the United States and some of her concerts were cancelled.
Makeba performed for half an hour Sunday at a concert near Naples on behalf of an Italian writer, Roberto Saviano, who has received death threats after writing an expose of the Italian mafia.
"She had been the last one to go on stage, after the performances of other singers," said Carlo Hermann, an AFP photographer who covered the concert and witnessed fellow singers rush to her aid when she collapsed.
"There were calls for an encore and at that moment someone asked if there was a doctor in the house. Miriam Makeba had fainted and was lying on the floor."
Makeba was the daughter of a Swazi mother and Xhosa father.
She captured international attention as a vocalist for a South African group, The Manhattan Brothers, when they toured the United States in 1959. Her citizenship was taken away the following year.
She was briefly married to trumpeter Hugh Masekela, another famous South African artist who also spent long years in exile under apartheid.
Makeba had her biggest hit in 1967 with "Pata Pata" -- Xhosa for "Touch Touch", describing a township dance -- but unwittingly had signed away all royalties on the song.
She was often short of money and could not afford to buy a coffin when her only daughter, Bondi, died aged 36 in 1985. She buried her alone, barring a handful of journalists from covering the funeral.
According to her biography, she also battled with cervical cancer and a string of unhappy relationships. It said rumours of her alcoholism were unfounded.
While she was still in enforced exile, she performed with Paul Simon in the US singer's 1987 Graceland concert in Zimbabwe, neighbouring South Africa.
She finally returned to her homeland in the 1990s after Nelson Mandela was released from prison as the apartheid system they had both fought for so long began to be dismantled.
But it took her six years to find someone in the South African recording industry to produce a record with her. She entitled it "Homeland".

What’s the story of the 12-inch single?

Well, I take the credit for that. It’s a shame because most good things happen by accident. I think most things are created that way. It’s a mistake; a negative that turns into a positive. It’s like the idea of a break. I created the break, because a song modulated [changed key] and I had to make the song longer. The only way to make it longer was to take everything out of it that was music. So I had to break it down to the rhythm, but only because it modulated. Instead of it modulating once, it modulated twice. That was how the break was created.
The 12-inch? José Rodriguez, my mastering engineer, ran out of 7-inch blanks. I used to do work at Media Sound on Fridays – that’s where we did Gloria Gaynor – and I wanted to have the Trammps record cut. This was the first Trammps record on Atlantic, so I asked Dominic, the mastering engineer if he could do it and it was Friday. He said he couldn’t do it. He was going away that weekend. Ask me Monday, he said. I gotta get some refs cut, he said, well, I can’t help you. And I said what about your assistant? He said, you mean the Puerto Rican sweeper? I went crazy.
But I said to José, aren’t you learning to master? Oh yes. Fine, I said. I’ll be the ears, but you make it work. It’s called ‘That’s Where The Happy People Go’. I want you to cut me ref dubs. I liked it so much I said, I’m gonna do you a big favour. I’m gonna put your name on that record. I did it mainly because I was so mad at Dominic for calling him a Puerto Rican sweeper. It was such a lousy thing to say.
But that wasn’t the first 12-inch. I would say that the very first one – ah, I remember now. ‘That’s Where The Happy People Go’ was the second record to have his name on it. The first one was ‘So Much For Love’ by Moment of Truth on Roulette with José’s name on it.
The first 12-inch was ‘I’ll Be Holding On’ by Al Downing. It was never commercially available. The seven-inch blanks, they were out of them. So he had to give me a twelve-inch. And I said, heugh, that’s ridiculous. So they said, I know what we’ll do: we’ll spread the grooves and make it louder. And of course, when I heard it I almost died. And at that time there only about seven or eight disc jockeys around and I used to see them on Fridays and I would give them acetates.

Who did you take it to?

Oh, let’s see. There was Richie Kaczor, David Rodriguez, Steve D’Acquisto, Bobby DJ, Walter Gibbons. A lot of fun back then. And so many of them are dead now. It’s sad. Especially because these guys; they all loved music, they really did. They would rather be admired by their peers than be super-successful.

Jim Burgess "The last party at the saint" 1988

Jim Burgess was born on July 21, 1952 in Okeechobee, Florida. He trained as a classical tenor and opera singer, and had "an amazing ear". He started as a DJ in Florida in the early-mid 1970s and then "moved on to Limelight, a gay club in Atlanta" where he was "discovered" by Tony Martino and Alan Harris, the owners of the New York club 12 West.
He moved to New York where he played at "all the hottest clubs like 12 West, Infinity, the Saint, Underground, Studio 54, Paradise Garage, as well as playing the Ice Palace in Fire Island".
Burgess had been one of the initial three resident DJs at the Saint along with Alan Dodd and Roy Thode, from its opening on 20 September 1980.
Burgess's popularity was attributed not only to his style and technique, but a love for theatrical effects and elements, which developed from his love of opera. He would frequently create his own "sound scenes" by using the dialogue from well-known film scenes over the break of a record - as well as attentuating the effect through long mixes and sophisticated blending.
Burgess chose to end his career at age 28 with a farewell party at the Saint on 31 January 1981. During the party, he famously walked out at the peak of the night and left the record run out. Nevertheless, he still did subsequent infrequent gigs in New York, and started playing regularly at the Saint again in 1986. His actual last gig according to his partner was at The Ice Palace in 1989.

I must admit this isn't really my cup of tea. But as an historical artifact of the infamous club which inspired "Welcome to the pleasure dome" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

Trevor Fung & Colin Hudd-Spectrum Night, Legends, Manchester - Early 1989

Trevor began DJing in 1977 quickly gaining a reputation alongside the fondly remembered Steve Walsh including radio shows and live support. This led to him joining the Funk Mafia with Chris Hill, Greg Edwards and Bob Jones etc. playing the Soul Weekender & All-Dayer circuit but by 1981 his taste had exhausted the purist confinements of the "Soul Boy" movement and he branched out at Rumours London playing a broader selection of music.

In 1982, Trevor was invited to play at Amnesia (Ibiza) with respected resident DJ and friend Alfredo and later that year teamed up with long time friend Paul Oakenfold to set up The Funhouse. They then formed the infamous Project club in Streatham where they gave opportunities to many up and coming deejays.

The Project has been credited by The Media as one of London’s first clubs to play House Music.

In 1987 Trevor returned to Ibiza with the Project Club concept playing a mix of Hip Hop, Indie, Acid and House, which became known in the media as Balearic Beat.

His influence and what followed during this particular period is immeasurable. Fellow DJ's and friends Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway, Johnny Walker, Lisa Loud, Nancy Noise and Danny Rampling were all visitors to Trevor’s events in Ibiza in 1987 inspiring them to launch seminal club nights in the UK including Future, Shoom, Spectrum, The Land Of Oz, and Trip thus changing the face of The UK Club Scene. Trevor played at all of these nights and went on to headline at the M25 Orbital “Rave” events Sunrise, Energy, World Dance and Biology.

Ron Hardy @ The Muzic Box 19/06/84

Ron Hardy is the only man who can test Frankie Knuckles' status as Godfather of Chicago House Music.
Though he rarely recorded under his own name and left little evidence of his life, Hardy was the major name for Chicago's dance music from the late '70s to the mid-'80s. By 1974, he had already effected a continuous music mix with reel-to-reel machines plus a dual-turntable setup at the club Den One. Several years later, Hardy played with Knuckles at a club called the Warehouse and though he spent several years in Los Angeles, he later returned to Chicago to open his own club along with Robert Williams, the Music Box.

While Knuckles was translating disco and the emerging house music to a straight, southside audience at the Power Plant, Hardy's 72-hour mix sessions and flamboyant party lifestyle fit in well with the uptown, mostly gay audience at the Music Box. A roll-call of major Chicago producers including Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, Phuture's DJ Pierre and Chip E all debuted their compositions by pressing up acetates or reel-to-reel copies for Hardy to play during the mid-'80s.
Lingering problems with heroin addiction forced him to leave the Music Box around 1986 and though he continued to DJ around the area, Hardy wasn't around when Chicago became house music's mecca later in the decade.

Deejay Ron Hardy died in 1991, and that's the only reason why he's not a star today. With the clubs he's been spinning for (especially the Music Box from 1983 to 1988), he was drawing the way of the new sounds of the night. Something was definitely changing, and he was part of the change. You know that one day 'Jack Has a Groove'... but did you really know when late Disco turned into early House music? Ron Hardy was it. Icon of the gay House nights of Chicago, that man was a deejay like some others are monks... it was everything for him, a sort of religion. Mixing speedy electro-pop with accelerated disco, edited disco-classics with acid tracks, when other deejays used to mix it warm... he used to mix it cold. One of his very close friends told me that he was almost never sleeping... mixing records all the time, doing weird things with his turntables. There was about nothing in his appartment, nothing but black shiny records, and a bed... and that for years since the 70's when he left for westcoast, the 80's when he came back to Chicago, until 91 when everything stopped. Too much drugs and awaken nights... he killed his own batteries for the music.
At least we still have the tapes of his talent and the memories of his friends.

I received this notification this morning, telling me one of my posts was removed due to an objection by an unknown entity, relating to copyright infringement.

This was unintentional, as I try to make sure all posts are commercially unavailable.

But funnily enough, the post in question was a mix I had done myself. Granted some tracks were still available. But it was done to showcase these tracks to a wider audience.

The Dance music industry has used DJ's and mixtapes to promote artists and music for a long time! In fact a lot of these tracks would be overlooked without DJ mixes.

If the tracks were posted in their entirety, unmixed full versions, I could understand the objection. But as it is, I feel this faceless entity may be doing more harm to the dance music scene than good.

The People's Choice went through its share of personnel changes in the '70s and '80s. When the Philadelphia outfit recorded the album" We Got the Rhythm" for TSOP/Philadelphia International in 1976, its lineup included original members Frankie Brunson (lead vocals/keyboards), David Thompson (drums, percussion), and Darnell Jordan (rhythm guitar) as well as more recent additions like Guy Fiske (lead guitar), Roger Andrews (bass), and Donald Ford (keyboards).
This track from the album (which Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff produced at Philly's famous Sigma Sound Studios) wasn't a huge radio hit, although club DJs found "Cold Blooded and Down-Right Funky," to be highly infectious with the crowd and it still hits the spot today.

Captain Sky "The Adventures Of Captain Sky"

Born 10th July, 1957, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A., Captain Sky is the alter ego of Daryl Cameron, a Chicago based, bass player.
Under this aliase, Daryl assembled a large group Chicago based musicians and embarked on a recording career in 1979.
He has released two albums on AVI Records ('Pop Goes The Captain' and 'The Aventures Of Captain Sky'), one on TEC in 1980 'Concerned Party No.1' and one again for AVI('The Return Of Captain Sky' ) in 1981.
Musically, these records could be considered as a mix between P.Funk, pre-historic electrofunk and raw sticky disco and are surely one of the most heaviest Funk records ever recorded.

A truly awesome track with an amazing vocal performance

by Burgess which has inspired me to post some more from these

Compilation label set up by Morgan Khan,
a Hong Kong-born Indian who grew up in London.
He had worked in the UK record industry
since the mid 1970's. Possibly some of the

most important music produced that has
helped shape the future of electronic dance music.
The release of Street Sounds Electro 1 in 1983
paved the way for the Hip hop culture to be heard.
The use of such sounds as the Roland TR-808
rhythm machine, Roland Jupiter-8 synthesizer,
Master of Ceremonies and the introduction of the
Phonograph as an "instrument" (Scratching)
were all prominent features.

The Electro series was popular amongst the Break dance

scene with the general agreement that Electro 1-6

and the Crucial Electro series being the most recognized.(wikipedia)

Enjoy Records was a record label
owned and operated by Bobby Robinson
from the late 1950s through the mid-1980s,
and was run out of his record shop
at 125th Street and 8th Ave. in Harlem.
Starting with blues, R&B, and rock and roll,

Although she's not a household name, Marva Whitney is fondly remembered by funk devotees as one of the rawest, brassiest, most powerful divas the music ever produced. Along with fellow funk belters Lyn Collins and Vicki Anderson, Whitney made her name singing with the James Brown Revue for a few years, and her limited, much-sampled recordings for Brown-associated labels now fetch astronomical sums on the collector's market. Born in Kansas City, Whitney began performing at the age of three with her family's touring gospel group, the Manning Gospel Singers. She studied music in college and caught on as lead singer of the R&B group Tommy Gadson & the Derbys. In 1967, she signed on with the James Brown Revue as a featured female vocalist, meaning that she would perform her own small set every night while Brown took a break. Whitney accompanied Brown on his late-'60s tour of Vietnam, and made other international appearances with him as well. In 1969, Whitney made her first solo recordings for King, Brown's label at the time. She scored a Top 20 hit on the R&B charts with "It's My Thing (You Can't Tell Me Who to Sock It To)," a rewrite of the Isley Brothers hit; the follow-up, "Things Got to Get Better (Get Together)," just missed the R&B Top 20. Far too gutsy and funky to cross over to the pop charts, Whitney remained with the Revue until 1970, without scoring any more significant hits on her own. Still, cuts like "Unwind Yourself" (now very recognizable through several hip-hop samples) and the duet "You Got to Have a Job (If You Don't Work)" helped cement her reputation among record collectors. Her only studio LP, It's My Thing, was released in 1969 and has been heavily bootlegged and sampled by numerous DJs; her Live and Lowdown at the Apollo LP also commands hefty price tags. Whitney went on to record for the Isley Brothers' T-Neck label, as well as Nashboro, but her prime material is from the James Brown years. Seven of those tracks were compiled on the Polydor collection James Brown's Original Funky Divas. Whitney has reunited sporadically with Brown for live performances over the years.

Ultimate Breaks and Beats

The Ultimate Breaks and Beats (UBB) series was released in the mid-80s by Lenny Roberts (a/k/a Breakbeat Lenny). The records contained hundreds of classic Hip-Hop breaks, many of which were discovered by Hip-Hop's founding fathers. Hip-Hop DJs and producers quickly obtained copies of UBB and scavenged them for sampling material. Indeed, most Hip-Hop releases from the mid-80s until even the early 90s utilized breaks that could be found on UBB.

Marsha Hunt's - Oh no, not the Beast Day, one of her two 45's recorded for Vertigo Records, recorded in 1973 and taken off " Suck it and See ", that great double Vertigo compilation featuring Jade Warrior, Manfred Mann, Nucleus, Atlantis etc etc. Marsha Hunt was an American who moved to the UK in the late sixties. At one stage she featured with Ferris Wheel and was also in bluesman Alexis Korner's backing band. She also tried her hand in acting and as a radio talk show host in the UK.

The "Spanish Hustle" is an extremely dynamic latin-flavoured disco song with strong synth, and saxophone elements. The vocals are minimal but necessary to make the song sound so nice.

“Get On Up and Dance” is a tune that starts off softly, with some jazz notes, and grows to be a piece of Jazz Funk that beckons you to get into it and get involved.
